It’s not the teenager’s fault that s/he’s violent. It’s hir brain.

Do you remember being under the age of 18? Are you still under that age? I don’t know about you, but I don’t remember being completely incapable of being non-violent.

Remember what I said about some Republicans making me want to go all liberal? I take it back. The liberals seem to want to tell everyone that nothing’s their fault, it’s all because of a defect in their brain. These are the same people who think that they can sue McDonald’s for making them fat, so I’m not really surprised.

I like this line, in particular, from that article: “Adolescents might commit murder if they feel their lives are threatened or are under other duress, ‘even though they know right and wrong.’” Uh… if you feel your life is threatened, it’s not exactly murder. That’s called self-defense.

Also, “a child can premeditate a crime, ‘but they dont’ have a brain that also regulates that impulse to do something.’” Premeditation rules out the idea that it was an impulse kill anyway. No one’s saying that a child (or an adult for that matter) who was pushed hard and strikes out should be put to death. They should be punished, but that’s considerably different from committing first degree murder, which implies that you planned it. Planning is not an impulse!

If they can’t control that impulse, then why bother punishing them at all? It’s not their fault, after all.
