Video Games and Violence
You know, I get annoyed every time someone suggests that fast food restaurants are to blame for people getting fat on their food. I get frustrated when they suggest that gun manufacturers are to blame for shooting deaths. I get downright angry, though, when someone suggests that violent video games cause people to be violent.
I know the argument. “Violent videogames desensitize us to violence, blah, blah, blah.” I also know that I’ve spent a good portion of my life playing video games. Most of these games involve violence in one form or another, and I’ve never gotten an uncontrollable urge to run out and kill something.
Lawmakers in Washington State are apparently considering a bill that would hold game makers and sellers responsible if anyone under the age of 17 commits a crime because they played the game.
I started this post with the intent of tearing the whole idea here to shreds, but I think I’ve decided that it’s just too stupid an idea to examine. (And I wrote a whole post on “Corporate Communism“, so my stupidity tolerance is pretty high, I think…)
