Justice Sandra Day O’Connor has announced her retirement.

If you thought the battle over the other judges (and John Bolton) earlier this year was bad, you’d best run for the hills now. There was anticipation of a major battle when Chief Justice Rehnquist retires, but the Democrats weren’t losing anything if he was replaced with another conservative. If someone to the right of O’Connor is nominated, expect the debate to get very ugly, very fast.
