Review: Overlord
In Overlord, for the Xbox 360, the player takes the role of, well, the Overlord. You’re the leader of a small group of evil creatures who has just been awakened, and now you have to rebuild your evil empire from the ground up.
Your Overlord character walks around with a small group of minions who can be controlled as a group and assigned to various tasks. The main goal of the game is to gather various items that’ve been taken by the Seven Heroes who destroyed your tower and rebuild it. The gameplay resembles Pikmin more than anything else. The tone of the game is close to that of Dungeon Keeper, with plenty of bizarre humor thrown into the mix.
Your minions will automatically equip themselves with items that they find along the way, which provides both a touch of humor (early on, several of my minions were wearing pumpkins as helmets) and some extra fighting ability that comes in handy later. The Overlord, on the other hand, has to build his own weaponry, using a smelter (which you have to recover, since it’s been stolen). This weaponry is purchased using the gold you’ve found along the way, and can be made stronger by sacrificing minions during the creation process.
I haven’t tried the Overlord multiplayer yet, but as a single-player game, it’s extremely fun and well worth spending some time on.
