Zombie-pocalypse?

Given the other health scares we’ve seen in just the last couple of years, I am reluctant to think that, this time, the proverbial wolf has really arrived. Call me cynical, but the fact that there was similar rhetoric in use about the Swine Flu twenty years ago makes me doubt this is the end of the world.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t doubt that this variation of the Flu is, as always, a serious illness. It’s not something that should be taken lightly. It’s not the end of the world, though. Please, keep in mind that the reported 150+ dead in Mexico has actually been counted at 7 by WHO. That’s not to mention the fact that Mexico isn’t exactly the safest place to be for anyone right now, so there are likely to be external factors contributing to any deaths reported there.

Of course, all of the above was written before I read this:[a]

After death, this virus is able to restart the heart of it’s victim for up to two hours after the initial demise of the person where the individual behaves in extremely violent ways from what is believe to be a combination of brain damage and a chemical released into blood during “resurrection.”

I’ve seen quotes from a few crazy conspiracy theorists who believe that the Swine Flu is a biological warfare agent released by the United States in an attempt to “cull the herd” and kill poor people. Obviously, those people are wrong. The Swine Flu has been released by the Umbrella Corporation!

  1. Please, please, please note that this link is a joke. Look at the URL – it is not a BBC website. The sidebar and such seems to all map to this article at the BBC, which is actually titled, “EU warns against swine flu panic”. Also, again, I’m not making fun of the flu itself, which I admit is serious. I’m making fun of the abject hysteria that some people seem to have over this stuff. For more on that topic, see this XKCD comic. []
