Star Trek Short Review

Longer review later, because I’ve got to mull it over a bit (and, of course, see it again in a few hours with the guys). This is not your daddy’s Star Trek. I don’t mean that in the sense that Serenity wasn’t quite Firefly. I have to wonder if this is what fans of Battlestar: Galactica went through when they first saw the reimagining of that series. The characters are there, the basic plot is there, but it’s not really the same thing at all.

Please note that this comparison does not, in any way, denote disapproval of the movie. The reimagining of Galactica is terrific, but can anyone really watch both the ’70s Galactica and the ’00s Galactica and really think, “Oh, these are totally the same thing?” The same applies here. The new Star Trek film (which I can’t imagine won’t have a sequel or two) is a lot of fun, but there’s a huge difference between this and the original series.

My biggest complaint (well, the biggest non-spoilery complaint) is probably that this movie feels very… wrapped up. It feels like any number of modern movies based on the television shows of the past, as though it’s really a one-shot film designed to represent the whole franchise and reimagine it, but not to inspire more than that. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it seems like the sort of thing that would be more fitting for a franchise that existed on television for a handful of years and then “died”.

More later, including some comments on a few plot holes and insanities that I’m only avoiding now so I can talk them over with the guys before writing about them.

(Just so I can be like Paramount and milk this Star Trek thing for all it’s worth — this post had a WordPress word count of 284 before this ending, so even the “short” review counts as a full post for my one-post-a-day goal this month! Woo-hoo!)
